Leaving on a Biplane

Ok… ok… jet plane. I get it!

When I got an order for a biplane picture frame, I had to Google it. Honestly! I’ve seen them in a gazillion movies and documentaries but didn’t know that they were called biplanes. So after I found a few pictures and designs I could work off, I finally made a miniature paper model of it. But keeping with the proportions, the wingspan is huge. And even though I can mount it on a frame, packaging and transportation would be a nightmare. I thought a similar themed frame and the biplane model in front would work. Here it is!

Baking Frenzy

Blame the light posting on my blog to baking. Mum and I are obsessed. Dad and my husband aren’t helping with their insatiable appetites either.

With my sister’s help, mum rediscovered an old recipe we loved as kids. Banana bread! (Or banana pound cake). Just can’t get enough of it!

Evolve

Remember those classic black and white picture frames I made last December? I received an order for the same frames for two brothers, but their mom wanted them to be bigger and colorful! So those frames went from classic (for bigger boys) to psychedelic (for kids)! But that didn’t stop the kid in my house (a.k.a husband) from wanting these frames for him. They never really grow up, do they?

Flying South

December and January is such a wonderful time of year, not just because of the weather and festivities but also cause of the migratory pattern of friends. They invariably land in Singara Chennai , especially one little duck that manages to squeeze in an India trip every winter!

As she left back to the US, I thought I’d give her something to remind her of India and maybe make her homesick enough to visit more frequently. (She'd deny needing reminders, but she doesn't realize that her husband and she are more 'American' than they're willing to admit!) She had asked me to make three photo frames for her (5” X 7”) to place her brother’s, her sister’s and her wedding pictures in. I wanted to make something that looked ethnic.  Here’s what I made for her since she told me she had an entire wall to spare!

                                       

Apple Pie!

I know I’m supposed to blog about paper crafts and photo frames, but can’t seem to get food off my mind! Mum and I haven’t yet recovered from Christmas and so the baking continues… until we get bored of it or run out of unsalted butter.

We made an apple pie yesterday (actually mum made it while I pranced around intoxicated with the wonderful smells of nutmeg, cinnamon and apples). Everything in the world just looks and feels so much better with apple pie. This is mum’s apple pie…

She normally gives me the left over pie crust dough to make dad and me some diabetic tasting ‘diamond cuts’. But this time around she also had some leftover powdered spices that we just couldn't bear to discard. So we grated up an apple and I made myself some mini apple pies in our tart tins.

 I heart thee apple pie!

Small Doses of Happiness

So I finally made those cupcakes that I’ve been dreaming forever of making. Despite all those lovely recipes online and in magazines, I chose to use my mum’s age old trusted Brownie recipe from her completely falling apart, 30 year old ‘What’s cooking in Bangalore?’ recipe book.  And of course I needed to get a little help from her too ;)

Here’s how they turned out. 

I found that reindeer cupcake topper at a local store selling Christmas décor and it was stock piled with all the other decorations.  Six pieces for Rs. 26 - YAY!!! 

I think they’re actually fruit/ food picks, but works well this way don’t you think?

See that book falling apart? Thirty years of being cooked and spilled over does that.
